Experiment #1 - Baking with Bakerella

So around November of last year, my roommate Jen introduced me to the Bakerella website.  Jen's been taking some cake decorating classes, so week in week out I watched as she tested out different fondants and icing for her cakes.  On special occasions, she'd even make really neat looking spider or Cookie Monster cupcakes for Hallowe'en and friends' baby showers.

I was never a baker growing up. I mean, I'd bake simple cookies, cakes and brownies here and there but I never really tested out any fancier recipes. After going through the Bakerella website, I thought, the cakepops are just too cute. I should really give them a try!

So my first experiment was to make the reindeer cakepops as Christmas gifts. For the candy coating, I bought both the Wilton candy melts and semi-sweet chocolate blocks to see which would work better.  My attempt at melting the Wilton candy melts was an epic fail. :( I overheated the candy so the consistency made it very hard to dip the cakes into.  I then tried the melted chocolate blocks instead, which was much smoother. However, the coating was not thick enough like the candy melts and the lollipop stick and pretzle antlers would poke through the chocolate shell and ruin the cakepop.  Feeling a bit discouraged, I took a break for the night and gave it another try the next day.

So attempt #2...I decided to simplify the cakepops by recoating them w/ the Wilton candy melts (I got the right consistency the second time around!) and just added some sprinkles on them, and here they are.

Now I think I'm ready to move onto the fancier cakepops! :)
